A philosophical notion.
Jan. 18th, 2008 05:13 pmA notion came into my head just now...
Many people have this assumption that history is a straight arrow of progress, and most "progressive" issues are only of recent import. Transgender issues, polyamory, homosexuality, abortion, women's rights, slavery, environmentalism, etc...
The truth is that we are constantly ebbing and flowing with regards to these issues. Some centuries are more favorable to certain issues than others. And this is true geographically as well. Various cultures throughout the earth have been variable about their approaches to these issues over time as well, and never have all nations of the world agreed on even one of these issues at any particular time of history.
Throughout all time and space, there is and always has been diversity of opinion. Two cultures cannot be compared to determine which one was better in anything more than a purely subjective notion of "better." There is simply difference and change, without value, and without preference.
