Day 22: I had my first encounter with glass while walking barefoot last night. I was out for a night time walk with [livejournal.com profile] viesti, and I ran into a bunch of broken glass on the side walk. I didn't notice it until I was in the middle of it. Surprisingly, I only noticed it by the reflection of the street lights onto it. I didn't actually feel any pain. I immediately started to dodge around it and avoid the larger pieces of it. Once we were clear of it, I brushed my feet off of any spare bits of glass that had found their way onto my soles, and we continued on. I think we did almost a mile or two of walking that night. There didn't appear to be any pain or further damage to my feet from walking in the glass. Later that night, I did notice that my left foot had a small cut near the ball of the foot where one of the pieces of glass had managed to cut my skin. But it barely affected me, otherwise.

So there you go: My encounter with broken glass right in the middle of the sidewalk. I came away with a small slice taken out of the thick skin at the bottom of my feet, and no further damage or exposed raw flesh. All good. :)

I did have to throw on shoes today while I was painting over at my new place. The ridges of the aluminum ladder were digging into my feet and starting to hurt after a while. What I found really annoying about wearing the shoes while working was the amount of sweating I did into them! My feet were all icky and moist in there. It was quite a relief to take them off when I was all done and let them air out. Ahhh.. Happy bare feet.

It seems my experience of being barefoot is alternating between comfortable and painful. I'm really happy and enjoying my environment to a near ecstatic degree, and then I run into some obstacles that I'm not totally ready for yet, and it becomes a challenge and work again. I only have a certain level of stamina on certain types of rough gravel. After I exhaust that, my feet feel lots of pain and need TLC before they'll be happy and comfortable again. The cool part is that the more I do this, the more comfortable I get on such things. I can handle rough ground now that I couldn't handle at the beginning of my experiment, quite easily. Very nice.

I always get the feeling that people don't believe me when I tell them glass isn't a problem barefoot. Ah well, they don't have to, do they?

If you're not careful, it can be. But small pieces of glass really aren't a big deal.

I encountered some actual large pieces of broken bottle today. Those would have done some damage if I stepped on them hard. Admittedly, unshod, you'll feel the sharp edge before you put your full weight on them most likely, but they can still do damage. They were also very big and easy to spot and avoid.

On the otherhand, I walk through areas where I see small pieces of glass glinting all the time, and just don't even worry about them. A lot of it is auto safety glass which is about the same as stepping on a rock, but even regular glass tends to be no big deal.

See, that's the thing: I can always see the big pieces and know how to step to avoid getting sliced. My only trouble is little invisible slivers, and they aren't much worse than a thorn.

A lot of glass made these days is tempered safety glass. It's heated to higher temperatures then cooled off quickly to make it about ten times harder than regular glass. When it breaks, it doesn't break into jagged pieces, but instead it turns into little pebbles.

Yeah, that's used a lot in cars, so a lot of what's in the street is pretty safe. I think most of the problem glass comes from broken bottles. I'll find it on the street, on hiking trails, at campsites, etc. Of course, I usually don't happen to have anywhere I can put it to haul it away safely...

Usually glass doesn't go in, and when it does, usually I can just pull it out, but I have had to have a few nasty little shards pulled out by doctors.

Oh yeah.... Sweat... I have to wear shoes (not even sandals) to work (feh!), and the sweat is ewwww.
